HISTORY

Since the 1880’s Rwenzori Region has been a home for conflicts and tribal wars based on ethnicity, traditions, resources, religion, and politics. The Region is made up of 08 Districts and organized under 03 Kingdoms of Tooro, Rwenzururu, and Bamb, with each having an active youth wing that offers both an opportunity for peace and a threat to conflict. The ongoing ADF Attacks and recruitment require an active role by all state and non-state actors to deter the youths from being lured into acts of violence and extremism. The National Youth Policy (2004) recognises inadequacies in the involvement of Youths in the socio-economic development and in the promotion of peace, democracy, good governance, and upholding the values of society. The policy seeks to promote youth participation in democratic processes and civic and community affairs. As outlined in the NDP III, Uganda has the second youngest population in the world. This big Population is unemployed and is often used to actively engage in conflicts and take part in extremist actions. This calls for interventions and innovations from all state and non-state actors to work together to mobilize and sensitize the youth to actively promote peace processes while stopping them from taking part in conflicts and being lured into violent groups. This forms the Basis for the Formation and foundation of RPI as a non-state actor seeking to harness and amplify the role of youths in Governance, peace processes, and conflict resolution and stir their personal development and the Rwenzori Community.
